Mississauga

Request-time municipal coverage: washrooms, parking, dog areas, playgrounds, picnic areas, parks, libraries and community/recreation facilities where the connected City source supports the claim.

Commercial washroom pilot: four reviewed exact OpenStreetMap business objects have explicit toilets=yes. Missing access evidence remains unknown.

Try Nearby identity coverage: the reviewed 18-place OSM fallback snapshot is combined with the City of Mississauga 2025 Business Directory and a controlled high-confidence Overture Maps Places GTA snapshot. Identity sources can contain many private businesses, but Bathroom-now applies a separate controlled venue gate before any fallback is shown. Every visible identity-only candidate displays Restroom not confirmed.

Sheridan regression: the City directory omits the McDonald's at 2255 Erin Mills Parkway, while the generic Overture identity pipeline discovers that exact branch. It is not hard-coded.

Fallback eligibility: arbitrary independent restaurants, cafes, fast-food shops, hotels, gas stations and convenience stores do not enter the Bathroom-now Try Nearby pool. Their owner/customer rules vary too much to generalize safely. Controlled identity-only venue classes are limited to rest/service areas, mall or food-court common areas, conservatively allowlisted major counter-service franchises, and supermarkets.

Fallback ranking: after that eligibility gate, NearbyCheck uses one bounded attempt-value score: physical distance minus a finite entrance-confidence credit. Reliable location-specific walk-in-open evidence receives at most 0.50 km of credit; major public-facing counter-service franchises such as McDonald's and Tim Hortons receive at most 0.25 km of credit. Malls/food courts, rest/service areas and supermarkets have their own bounded credits. No access signal has absolute priority over distance.

Fallback display depth: up to 10 eligible places inside the same 2 km urgent radius can be retained after ranking. The first 3 are shown immediately and ranks 4–10 are collapsed behind a Show more control, so a useful fourth-or-later venue is still discoverable without making the default mobile page excessively long.

This access model never proves a restroom exists, is public, free or usable now. Known lobby closure excludes the place regardless of brand.

Current-condition layer: connected Mississauga closure information is checked for matching municipal results. A private-business fallback does not inherit municipal open/closed status.

Toronto

Request-time facility coverage: park/street washrooms, drinking water, dog areas, playgrounds, picnic areas, parks and selected community facilities.

Known gap: request-time Toronto parking is intentionally disabled because the previously connected official layer did not respond reliably enough for NearbyCheck to present it as current parking evidence.

Current-condition layer: connected Toronto condition information is checked where jurisdiction and result evidence match.

Oakville

Request-time facility coverage: washrooms, parking, playgrounds, libraries and community facilities where Town records make the capability explicit.

Current-condition gap: NearbyCheck does not yet have a normalized Oakville current-condition layer, so current access stays explicitly unverified.

Burlington

Request-time facility coverage: washrooms, libraries and community facilities where City records make the capability explicit.

Current-condition gap: mixed maintenance/facility categories are not treated as washrooms unless the record itself makes the claim explicit.

Ontario highway and rest-area washrooms

Official dated snapshots: NearbyCheck includes selected Ontario 511 rest-area and ONroute service-centre locations where the official record explicitly lists Lavatory = Y.

Food tenants are not automatically treated as having their own washroom, and year-round/status fields do not guarantee current lavatory usability.

Private businesses

NearbyCheck never assumes that a restaurant, cafe, gas station, mall, retailer or chain location has a usable public washroom. Business existence, washroom existence, access rules and current usability are separate claims.

The positive commercial layer uses exact OpenStreetMap objects under ODbL and requires location-specific positive toilet evidence. The accepted visible-result cap protection remains unchanged: qualified nearby positive commercial evidence can remain visible inside the normal 12-result cap without being upgraded to Best Match.

The separate Try Nearby lane can retain up to 10 exact eligible identity-only places within 2 km only for Bathroom now; the first 3 are shown by default and the rest are collapsible. Identity can come from reviewed OSM, City Open Data or the qualified Overture snapshot; restroom status stays unknown. Identity alone is not enough: generic independent businesses are filtered out before ranking.

Generic independent restaurants, cafes and fast-food shops are not eligible for identity-only Try Nearby. Hotels, gas stations and convenience stores receive zero access credit and are also excluded because access commonly depends on owner policy, staff permission, customer-only rules or a key. Known toilets=no is excluded. Later and multi-need flows do not use this fallback. Drive-through 24/7 never proves lobby or restroom 24/7.

The bounded attempt-value model is a practicality heuristic only for controlled venue classes. Major franchises get a limited 0.25 km credit. Known walk-in-open evidence gets a stronger but still finite 0.50 km credit. None of these is automatic first place or restroom evidence.

Other Canadian destinations

Place search works nationally, but outside connected coverage NearbyCheck may only have dated snapshots — or no useful evidence at all. Unknown stays unknown.

Needs that are deliberately not exposed yet

NearbyCheck does not expose Alerts as a place capability. Cooling-station selection is also withheld until listed locations can be distinguished from locations actually activated and usable now.
